2D or not 2D!

I keep hearing about a 3D revolution coming to our screens soon. There is a constant buzz of excitement and speculation about emerging technologies and their implications and this has, in turn, led to the dusting down of green and red specs, as websites and cartoons revisit the technology of old.

With over 30 big-budget 3D movies in production and over $16 billion currently being pumped into this developing technology, it is fast becoming the next big thing. Companies such as Mitsubishi, Panasonic and Samsung are stumbling over themselves to develop consumer TV systems that will enable a viewer to experience the technology from the comfort of their arm chair and Sky is working closely with Hyundai to roll out their next generation 3D TV service.

Big names like these with even bigger budgets pumping cash into developing 3D technology can only be good news for you and me. It seems that there are still some major issues to overcome, the most immediate surely being the necessity to don Timmy Mallet-like specs to experience the flying guts and gore. However, advances are being made here too with companies like Phillips and Mitsubishi working hard to produce the technology minus the eye wear.

Its not just the possibilities of passive participation in 3D technology that is expanding. Exploration into how to make 3D into an interactive experience is also steaming ahead with jaw-dropping interactive holograms like GE’s Smart Grid doing the rounds.

Personally, I’m incredibly excited about how the repercussions of this technology march will affect how I use a computer and, in particular, how I can design and build for the web. Personally, I’m looking forward to the holographic user interface and the design software that allows me to create multi-dimensional and tangible (yes, literally) user experiences.

I have to admit that for the first time in years I have been absolutely wowed by a piece of technology. Greg’s post, above, mentions a digital hologram produced by GE. It is absolutely awesome and I highly recommend that you follow the URL, turn on your webcam and give it a go.

If you’re anything like us here at Score, you will be left thinking about the endless possibilities that this technology could provide.
