Wikis

What is it?

A Wiki is: “the simplest online database that could possibly work.” It is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser.

Wikis support hyperlinks and have a simple text syntax for creating new pages and crosslinks between internal pages on the fly. They are unusual among group communication mechanisms in that they allow the organisation of contributions to be edited in addition to the content itself.

Wiki wiki means “quick” in Hawaiian.

What can it do for you?

Allowing everyday users to create and edit any page in a Web site is exciting in that it encourages democratic use of the Web and promotes content composition by non-technical users.

These are becoming a popular corporate tool for harnessing the knowledge of staff and partners creating a vehicle that can gather in one place all of their combined knowledge on specific subject areas. We have worked with clients to implement these tools allowing them to benefit from a streamlined thought / research process.
